Building a Resource for Radicals and Animal Rights Activists

resourceWhat little promotion that has been given to the Armory has been done on Facebook, where friends and I have been sharing links to each Armory article as they are published. All the time and effort expended has yielded relatively modest results.

The Facebook platform itself is not conducive to in depth discussion or analysis of issues. Notifications are fleeting and vague. The Like button function is worthless. Communication is limited to a tiny percentage of friends. Calls to action and important alerts are given no priority over chatter. I will be phasing out most of my presence on Facebook over the coming weeks or months, instead devoting my time to turning Armory of the Revolution into an organization rather than a one-man band.

The mission of Armory of the Revolution is to radicalize the animal movement. To force us to recognize that our present courses of action are not working, that more animals are suffering and dying than ever before in human history, that we need a paradigm shift in our goals and methodologies.

All the dogs and cats that have been rescued and saved by the animal movement in the past 50 years are fewer than the number of animals who will die in slaughterhouses in the next 8 hours!

A generous estimate of the number of dogs and cats saved by the animal movement is an average of a million per year over the past 50 years. Fifty million in total. Statistics reflecting the number murdered in shelters in the US has dropped from some 400,000 per year fifty years ago to about 40,000 per year today give us a rough estimate that rescuers have saved some 18,000,000 dogs and cats.

Extrapolating those numbers to Australia, the UK, western Europe, Canada, etc, suggests a similar achievement at best. Given that the rest of the world has done very little, a very generous guesstimate of 14,000,000 would bring the total number saved to 50 million. The actual figure is quite likely very well below that number.

Upwards of 60 thousand million (60 Billion) animals have their throats cut in slaughterhouses annually.

Which equals 1.153 billion animals murdered per week (eleven hundred fifty three million).

Which equals 165 million murdered per day! Almost seven million per hour! More than 50 million will die in the next 8 hours. More than the number of dogs and cats saved by the entire animal movement in the past 50 years.

There all all too few hours each day we can devote to the animals. I spend most of mine on Facebook, trying to recruit followers to the Armory of the Revolution, and posting observations and apothegms with some frequency. I post every couple of days to over 200 groups, pages, and friends’ timelines. I interact with all who comment on my posts.

Even so, subscriptions to the Armory are only a fraction of my Facebook friends. I must change my entire approach to social media if the Armory blog is ever to grow in influence and subscribers.

I hope to attract the participation of other writers, philosophers, revolutionary thinkers, social and political analysts, strategists, organizers, and propagandists.

I hope to build the Armory into the foremost resource for social revolutionaries in the country. The primary tool for radicals in the animal movement. The brain trust for Animal Rights.

To achieve that goal, the Armory must become more than just my own modest writings and opinions.

It must become a central library of revolutionary thought, of utilitarian philosophy, of strategic planning, of political and social analysis, of long and short term tactics and goals.

I hope to start organizing outreach programs that will extend far beyond the confines of Facebook, and will put the Armory in front of thousands of animal activists unfamiliar with the blog. My time will be much more efficiently spent on such projects than it is now being spent on Facebook.

  1. I’ve just signed up and will follow your blog; it’s interesting and inspiring.

One point that I’d suggest you consider featuring as I’ve not seen it debated much elsewhere in the movement :
There are a lot of “animal lovers” out there, including many vegans who’d align themselves with zero-tolerance ‘abolitionism’, who regularly support an industry that *deliberately* and indiscriminately kills hundreds of thousands of birds each year, and is directly responsible for the deaths of many more. This is an industry that’s also a huge contributor to climate change and thereby habitat destruction.

I’m talking about air transport. If you are serious about ending exploitation and abuse of animals, don’t travel by ‘plane. Ever.

I do wonder how certain high-profile evangelists of animal rights justify jetting around the world to publicly excoriate those who like to put some honey on their toast. In the internet age of communication, that’s surely utterly unnecessary, if not hypocritical (the Ultimate Crime).

  2. Roland is right, animals are not going to be safe whilst there are humans inhabiting this planet. Being realistic, only an apocalypse is the answer. We are expanding on all continents, accepting other people into our communities who do not stop at 2 children. We are trying to beat cancer, diabetes and coronary disease, we simply can’t accept death and this is upsetting the natural order of things. Animals are what we use not just for food, but they are our punching bags for frustrations, they make us feel powerful when we beat them. I hope karma exists and these vicious people get what’s owed to them. We do need a revolution, but what does that entail. I write to my MP complaining about the state animals are kept in on farms and transport trucks, about fox hunting and badger baiting, and all the other daily horrors but am replied to with a generic letter designed to placate and shut me up. What do we do? I’m a gentle person, I try and educate those around me, who actually laugh at me and call me that ‘bloody vegan tree hugger’ but I find my anger and frustration going through the roof. What do we do?

  3. Hi Roland,
I was wondering about this sentence:
“All the dogs and cats that have been rescued and saved by the animal movement in the past 50 years are fewer than the number of animals who will die in slaughterhouses in the next 8 hours!”

It’s a really striking statement, and I’d like to keep it handy in my brain to present to dog & cat lovers, but who are non-vegans.

Can you tell us where those numbers come from in case anybody were to ask me about it?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Christine,
The number of dogs and cats rescued is estimated on the high side. • But you also fail to mention the 60 billion animals who “have their throats cut in slaughterhouses annually” are also fed to our preferred pets, specifically the canine and the feline. This heinous arrangement for the mental solace of pet owners really doesn’t equate to lives saved, does it?

Let’s paint a more accurate portrait of the reality that exists for all the animals we control, whether they–the animals–are cherished or condemned.

  4. It would just be SO GREAT if you could build a big movement and resource out of Armory of the Revolution! I prefer Facebook to email because in Facebook, the posts are already open and there’s often a picture — which is worth a thousand words. It’s so much easier to scan 50 Facebook posts and know what they’re about than to scan 50 emails.

I live on social security and have very little disposable income to contribute to my favorite causes like animal rights. I can only hope for the best I guess. You are a visionary and have a broad vision, taking in the Big Picture. This is what it takes to found an effective organization! But I have to get by hoping for and celebrating small victories, like the rescue of a dog or an elephant, or the closing down of a slaughter house. I so wish to live long enough to see the revolution in the heart of humanity required for animals to be safe with humans. But my feeling is that humanity is blighted and animal safety, much less equality, is a long shot. But I know you’re up for it and I so hope you are successful with your Armory and all your projects to protect animals!

  5. Yes. Makes sense. FB is a selfgratificational environment, after all. Keep me in the loop. And good luck. No Finer dedication. despite my skepticism about any kind if political long term gain.
