Liberals Fighting for a Republican Court! WTF?

The degree to which the left has been rendered impotent and irrelevant by both the Democratic and Republican political establishments is evident in the battle over Obama’s attempt to name Merrick Garland to the US Supreme.

Republicans want the next president to make the appointment, hoping a Republican president is elected in November. Democrats are demanding the Senate act on Obama’s nomination.

Progressive Democrats have no reason to applaud the nomination of Garland. He is a right of center Republican, arguably a more reasonable jurist than was Antonin Scalia whom he would replace, but hardly a liberal.

Which leaves progressives effectively having to fight for a conservative justice to be seated because of the possibility that an extreme right wing candidate may be appointed by a victorious Republican president.

To his credit, Bernie Sanders has called on President Obama to withdraw the nomination of Garland.

As a practical matter, there is no one running for president who would nominate a progressive justice to the court, with the exception of Bernie Sanders.

Progressives have no expectations that Hillary Clinton will appoint a liberal justice, and the likelihood that a Republican would is non-existent.

Clinton is using the issue of appointments to the Supreme Court as the penultimate reason to support her candidacy. Aside from the current vacancy on the Court, the next president could name as many as three more justices.

Those fighting the interest that own Hillary Clinton, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, the fossil fuel industries, the private prison industry, defense contractors, the healthcare lobby, etc,, have little reason to believe that her appointees will not reflect her allegiances and indebtedness to those who own her soul.

The vacancy on the high court occasioned by the death of Scalia has raised the stakes in the presidential lottery, and made Sanders nomination an even greater imperative than it was before.
