Today’s Thought:
Each year an Animal Rights conference is held, alternating between Washington, DC and Los Angeles.
In my opinion it is a waste of time and money.
But it is mostly a waste of opportunity.
Organizations showcase themselves. Personalities posture.
Participants pat each other on the back and brag about their successes.
It is a mutual admiration love fest.
Which does the animals no good, or precious little.
Millions of dollars are wasted on air fares, hotel rooms, conference fees, restaurants, souvenirs and sightseeing.
Money which could have been spent effectively for the animals.
Talking heads take credit for this minor victory or that.
Egos need to be served, so there is no shortage of speakers.
But the speakers are preaching the same sermons to the same people. Year after year.
The biggest waste is the missed opportunity.
The opportunity to radicalize the AR movement.
The opportunity to develop political strategies.
The opportunity to coordinate effective recruitment.
The opportunity to train leadership.
A couple of days a year is not productive for training or educating.
We need outreach, curricula, ongoing recruitment on school campuses, online training conferences, seminars on revolutionary theory, political strategy and philosophy.
This is the 21st Century.
We hardly need to employ 20th Century technology in 19th Century venues.
The movement is in dire need of leadership.
Of ideas.
Of vision.

Are you suggesting that the Democrats will win the 2018 midterms? That Democrats will win enough state houses and legislative chambers to control reapportionment in 2020? If that is what you mean, I would be most interested to hear how you think that would be possible. Care to enlighten us?

I have to agree about the animal organizations. They largely preach to the choir but do not get many fervent (i.e., vegan) converts. They apparently have to draw from the middle ground to avoid being too “radical” (again, vegan) like PETA and other groups who are against farm animal exploitation. The movement is doing some outreach but probably not enough. The movement does, indeed, need leadership, ideas, and vision. It also needs dedicated, long-term commitment from followers, and a few more huge donors wouldn’t help.
As for revolution and activism, after listening to the video that Rene kindly sent, I was reminded of a standoff we saw on national TV. It was that between welfare rancher Cliven Bundy and the Bureau of Land Management over Bundy’s failure to pay grazing fees. He had a group of well-armed militia (or thugs) with him, and the BLM backed down.
This is what Hedges had to say in his book Wages of Rebellion: “Imagine if, instead of right-wing militias, so-called terrorists–who have never been found responsible for taking a single American life–had showed up armed in Nevada on April 12, 2014, to challenge the federal government’s attempt to thwart rancher Cliven Bundy from continuing to graze his cattle on public land. How would the authorities have responded if those carrying guns had been from the environmental group EarthFirst!”
You can bet the feds would have called down the full force of the Animal Enterprises Terrorism Act.
By the way, one of the latest things I saw on Bundy was that his unfortunate cattle were starving and turning feral out on the range.
