Today’s Thought:

In all of American history there has never been a third party candidate elected to the presidency. And third parties only become major parties when one the the major parties ceases to exist. The structure of the American political system makes it impossible for a third party candidate to win the presidency, as an absolute majority of electoral votes must be won or the race is thrown into the House of Representatives. There, each state gets one vote, decided by the majority of each state’s delegation.

For a third party to succeed, it would have to already have a substantial congressional presence.

Growing the Greens should be the goal of this election cycle, not winning the White House.

I urge progressives to vote Trump in swing states and Jill everywhere else.

  1. Third party or no party makes no difference to me. I despise both hillary and trump I cannot cast a vote for someone that I absolutely loathe. However, if I were forced into choosing one I would choose trump and here is why. Trump stands for wrong values, but at least he stands for something that can be identified. hillary on the other hand stands for nothing but hillary. Supporters of Trump absolutely love him and they think of him as a person of integrity who is representing them, the middle class people who have been ignored and shut out of the political decisions that affect their lives. On the other hand supporters of hillary, position her as the lesser of the two evils. This woman has so little credibility and accomplishments that nothing better can be said about her except being the lesser of the two evils.

    • Lincoln was not a third party candidate. The major parties in 1850 were the Democrats and the Whigs. In 1854 the Republican were founded out of the Whigs and anti-slavery Democrats. In 1860 The Republicans were the major party, as the Democrats has split between the Northern and Southern Democrats.
