Don’t Get Bernie or Bust? Let Me Explain it to You!

bernie or bust

To those of you liberals who don’t understand the Bernie or Bust movement, allow me to explain it in a way that may be clearer and more detailed than what you are used to hearing.

Politics in the USA

What you are seeing is a group of people who hit their breaking point — and some day, you will hit yours too. It may be a month from now, it may be eight years from now. The injustices that have been allowed to thrive in our country have resulted in the death and suffering of millions of people. We have a climate crisis, we have lead in our water, we have massive income and wealth inequality, and we have millions of people in prison for petty “crimes” who are being used as slave laborers. These are just a small fraction of the injustices which permeate through every aspect of our government.

The people of this movement have come to the realization that our current system is broken beyond repair and the time for incremental change is over. This is worth repeating. The system under no circumstances can be fixed with establishment politics; it can only be fixed by a progressive political revolution that sends a message loud and clear that we the people are setting a new standard for our elected representatives.

Bernie Sanders understands the urgency to navigate our way out the whirlpool of injustice and impending disasters that inevitably await us and he has a voting record that proves he has the wisdom required to make the right decisions for the country.

When he saw the candidates running for the democratic nominee, he hit his breaking point. Despite never having any aspirations to be president, he knew he had a moral obligation to run. He knows that a Clinton presidency will only prolong the stagnation of our broken system. He knows if she becomes president, in four to eight years from now, our elected representatives will still be reduced to nothing more than a glorified telemarketer begging for money.

He knows we can not afford to compromise on taking aggressive action to address climate change or other necessary regulations that are needed to prevent the death or suffering of millions or even billions of people.

He knows we don’t have time for incremental change, especially when that incremental change is going to be led by a centrist candidate with a history of voting blunders that resulted in a diminished middle class and an unstable middle east — by a candidate who has amassed her personal wealth from the same special interests who fund her campaign — and by candidate who is basically campaigning on fixing the damage from the legislation she voted for in the first place — the same legislations that Bernie Sanders passionately spoke out against to anybody who would listen.

For these reasons, Bernie Sanders stepped up and took on the establishment. Progressives finally had a candidate who was something so much more than the stereotypical politician. Sanders has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he has by far the best judgment and the strongest principles of any candidate to run for office in a very long time.

He built up an unprecedented grassroots moment with a very popular platform among democrats and independents. The progressive movement finally had a leader with a vision and a strategy to wrestle our government back from the wealthy few. He inspired millions of people who have long been disengaged from politics to start caring and participating in the system — which is exactly what needs to happen for progressives to take control of the house and senate and end the gridlock we see today.

I’m well aware of most of the scandals Hillary Clinton has been involved in — both the real ones and the fake ones — but out of all of the unethical things she has done, I think the worst was her intentional sabotage of the progressive revolution.

For years, democrats and liberals have blamed republicans for the problems that plague our country. MSNBC regularly issued scathing reports about republican corruption and obstructionism. Progressives rallied behind the “liberal media” and the democratic party (some reluctantly) who were doing what little they could do given the republican opposition.

Democrats have always defended raising money from special interests because it was a necessity. They had to do it because the republicans were doing it. But, Bernie Sanders proved that his platform combined with his refreshing honesty and consistency was so popular that he could raise massive amounts money without relying on any special interests.

This is something Hillary Clinton could not do if her life depended on it. This is not a phenomenon that can be manufactured by anyone with money and power. This is a phenomenon that can only be created by a candidate with an impeccable track record marked by a commitment to altruism and reason.

Hillary should have dropped out early and supported him. The democratic party would have had an incredibly strong candidate with a scandal-free past. The vast majority of her supporters would have accepted him with open arms and been just as passionate about him as his current supporters are. He would be virtually guaranteed to win in a landslide victory against any candidate the republicans could put forward.

But, Hillary Clinton had different plans. She wanted more than anything to be president — and in the course of this campaign, she has revealed the truth about the democratic party and the “liberal media.”

When Bernie Sanders’ generated a massive amount of momentum for the progressive revolution and the progressive principles that the democratic party and liberal media claim to want, he and his movement were not accepted by the media nor the democratic party. Instead, he was seen as a threat and the democratic party and the Clinton campaign sought to extinguish his momentum.

They could have embraced Bernie’s revolution and doubled its support. They would have been able to launch a fierce campaign uniting enough people to win majorities in every branch of government.

But instead, they sabotaged his campaign through the use of propaganda. Sometimes the propaganda was blatant, sometimes is was subtle, but there is no doubt it was there and there is no doubt it was effective.

Bernie was painted as a pie in the sky idealist with no chance of winning and no concept of reality. But this is not the case and it is not what the Clinton campaign and the media believe. They knew that Bernie Sanders could win and the progressive revolution could build support. That is why the DNC had to hide Clinton and schedule debates at times when people wouldn’t see them. If Bernie couldn’t win, then the DNC and the media wouldn’t have to resort to protecting Hillary and vilifying Sanders.

The republicans are extreme and their policy is worse than Clinton’s center-right policy agenda. But at least the republicans don’t pretend to be on our side. The Clintons and the liberal media are not stupid. They know what they did and Sanders supporters know what they did — and it was nothing short of a betrayal.

So if Clinton wins the nomination, don’t be confused when millions of Sanders supporters stay home or vote for Trump. Betrayal is personal and millions of people are more angry and discouraged than many people realize.

  3. I agree with everything but the last paragraph. Berniecrats will NOT vote for Trump, any more than we would vote for Shillary. I’ve been a life-long Democrat, always voting Dem. for over 40 years. But like millions of others, I am finally facing that voting for “the lesser of two evils” is STILL voting FOR evil; and I decided I will not do that anymore. Today’s Democrats are more right-wing than Reagan (who was one of the evils we were exhorted to vote against); they are no longer progressive; they do not represent most of us in any meaningful way.
I was considering not voting for the first time in my life, because there was no real choice: then Bernie Sanders decided to run, and for the first time in my life, I have a real choice in upcoming elections.
    Bernie or bust, baby.

    • Allowing Hillary to win the presidency will put all we have done in jeopardy. Hillary and her cohorts will effectively stymie or kill Bernie’s revolution. If she is president, the Democrats will not gain back control of Congress until 2030. If she is defeated, Bernie will be the most influential Democrat in the country, the revolution will continue full speed, and we will nominate Warren or another progressive in 2020. Voting for Trump is not voting for the lesser of two evils, it is strategically excising evil from the leadership of the Democratic party.

  4. Clinton supporters are the new obstructionists to real constructive change. To stubbornly vote for a candidate that polls indicate puts the White House in Republicans hands when you can chose to get behind a candidate that is a sure thing is poor judgment on the part of anyone who understands the numbers. Put your pride away and get behind the FDR type of candidate so desperately needed to address issues like climate change. The children of Clinton supporters will be seen as the ones who handed Trump the White House. In terms of climate change and obscene inequality, supporting anyone other than Sanders will be viewed by future generations as stupid at the very least, and possibly knowingly a criminal act if the motive is financial gain over the fate of a livable world ecosystem. You will be hated because you chose defend a corrupt election system and elect a capitalist to regulate capitalism, that is, Clinton, a multi millionaire, who lives off of her investments rather than her labor. It is not in her personal interest to bite the hand that feeds her.I would rather live with a clear conscience and vote for the green party, than vote for ether of the evils. Looking back, I will be able to say, I did all I could, even to the point of waisting my time trying to convince you and other stubborn Clinton supporters. If you win,we all lose. And future generations will hold you accountable. Good luck explaining your actions to your grand children.

    • God, you are positing such a delusional, ignorant, hypocritical, dishonest, propaganda-consuming position – utterly devoid of critical thinking, utterly filled with non sequitur. This is, in fact, how Nazism took hold – you are so deeply wrong in every statement you’ve made – utterly brainwashed and utterly ignorant of American history and certainly of Hillary Clinton’s history. So damn sad.

    • Donald Trump could singlehandedly force a re-alignment of the US political parties.

Until Donald Trump, the GOP was the party of free trade agreements, military adventurism, cutting capital gains taxes, corporate welfare, tax loopholes, trickle-down economics, super pacs, and lobbyist influence in campaigns and government.

      No more.

Trump has ignored establishment orthodoxy and repudiated establishment priorities.

Trump has been able to take his message condemning military intervention and perpetual war to the people without the need to raise campaign money from the arms manufacturers, munitions lobbyists, warship builders, and the aircraft industry.

Trump has been able to fight trade agreements like NAFTA and the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) because he does not need bribes from multinational corporations, Wall Street, and banking lobbyists.

Trump is too rich to be bribed and doesn’t need to steal.

Donald Trump may well be the most talented and effective politician since Abraham Lincoln. Most scholars credit FDR with the mantle of the most skilled politician in modern times, but critical analysis has handed the mantle to Bill Clinton. In light of this election cycle, the title belongs to Donald Trump.

I have been a political strategist and consultant to politicians for over 40 years. Donald Trump is the most effective candidate I have ever seen. He has an almost prescient capability to read a room and an audience. He is a brilliant and well educated man who has the ability to speak to crowds using the lowest common denominator of communication. He understands what will play in the media and what will not. He has dominated the news, the discussion, the polls, the primaries, and the delegate count since he announced his candidacy last year.

Nothing in modern political history even comes close to Trump’s domination of the media, the issues, and the voters.

His populist, anti-establishment message is resonating with a growing segment of the American public.

Take me, as a case in point. I disagree with Trump on almost every issue. He wants to build a border wall, I favor open borders. He wants to build up the military, I want it drastically reduced. He calls himself a conservative. I call myself a state socialist. He is in favor of the police. I think police are generally thugs. Not much of a political match, right?

      Wrong.

I support Bernie Sanders for president, and certainly prefer him to Trump. But what happens if Hillary is nominated?

Like a great many progressives, I see Hillary as the enemy. She is a Wall Street puppet, a tool of the banking industry, and a proponent of trade agreements. She has indicated she will continue Obama’s policies. And I have contempt for most of those very policies. Wild horse roundups, the killing of wildlife for the cattle ranchers, the drone strikes that kill innocent civilians, the appointing of industry executives and lobbyists to regulatory positions within the government which oversee their very industries, the sell out of the environment to Royal Dutch Shell, the massive deportations of undocumented Hispanics, And the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Sanders opposes the TPP. Hillary has favored NAFTA, trade deals with China, Korea, and Viet Nam. She called the TPP the “gold standard” of trade agreements until Sanders entered the race against her. Then she decided that there were “problems” with it, not specifying what they are or what she will do about them.

Trade agreements make is easier and more profitable to kill animals. They encourage and reward live export. They make it cheaper to produce corpses. They override US cruelty standards, such as they are. They make it impossible for the US to ban the import of even the most horribly exploited and slaughtered creatures.

The differences between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are fundamental, and profound. And on trade, Sanders voters are much closer to Donald Trump than they are to Hillary Clinton. I know I certainly am.

Which is why trade will be the penultimate issue in the general elections, and why, as things presently stand, Donald Trump would be my candidate if Bernie is not nominated.

Should Donald Trump be defeated in November, it is more than likely the Republican party will return to being a wholly owned subsidiary of Big Business and billionaires. But if he is elected, the Republican party will become a populist party, free of the control of right wing ideology and corporate bank accounts. Trump will be under no obligation to appoint industry executives and lobbyists to positions in his administration which oversee their very industries. Obama, Bush, Clinton, pappy Bush, Reagan, etc, all towed the line for Wall Street and the special interests, and populated their administrations with industry hacks and special interest bagmen.

For years, middle class, lower income, and poor Republicans have voted against their own economic interests, because their social values have been held hostage to the interests of billionaires and Wall Street. Doctrinaire conservatives extorted support from evangelicals, anti-abortionists, gun nuts, and bigots with their checkbooks.

“You want your conservative social issues advanced? You need to vote for our guy!”

The Donald trumped that political norm.

Trump is appealing to a populist base that is distinguishable from the populist left only on social issues. And Trump is far more attractive to blue collar Democrats and left wing populists than is Hillary Clinton.

Hillary supports trade agreements. Trump does not.
Hillary supports military interventionism. Trump does not.
Hillary supports corporate welfare. Trump does not.

A contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will almost assuredly re-align the political parties.

Wall Street and billionaires will flock to Hillary, as their influence in the Republican party will be substantially diminished. Blue collar Democrats, independents, populists and workers will embrace Trump, as the Democratic establishment has been at odds with their interests.

Depending upon the outcome of the election, the result could mean a complete redrawing of party lines.

It is quite possible the Republicans will become a populist right of center party, rejecting the political right as advanced by such politicians as Ted Cruz, whose philosophy is heavily influenced by Wall Street, Big Oil, and pharmaceutical money.

The Republican donors will have nowhere to go but to Hillary Clinton and the Wall Street Democrats, in effect creating a centrist party dominated by billionaires and Wall Street bankers.

Progressives could then build a democratic socialist party from the ground up, appealing to Sanders voters and various minor third parties, such as the Greens, Peace and Freedom, Socialists, etc.

There has not been such a political shakeup since 1854, when the Republican party was organized out of the Whigs and Northern Democrats.

Time will tell if such an opportunity will present itself. For the left, it would mean a political vehicle that actually advances social justice and egalitarianism.

For those in the animal movement it would mean a potential ruling party that actually embraces Animal Rights.

And it will be thanks to Donald Trump!

Liberals will squeal in protest at the idea of a Trump presidency. Liberals are terrified of Trump for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that he may be able to make an appointment, or several, to the US Supreme Court.

The animals do not care. And this is an election cycle that, for me, is for the animals. So I do not care, either!
