Today’s Thought:

While billions of animals are slaughtered every week in slaughterhouses, compassion for them from the general public is non-existent. But when Cecil was murdered by Walter Palmer, outrage erupted around the world.

People are idiots, but we need to adjust our efforts to accommodate their idiocy.

Josef Stalin observed that a single death is a tragedy, but a million deaths is a statistic. It is just that inability of the human mind to easily grasp the scope of horrors that explains the outrage over Cecil and the complacency about the 60 billion innocent creatures murdered by industry every year.

  1. The last time I got my hair done (using a gift certificate I won), the hairstylist and I discussed animals. Well, because she and her fiance have chickens, they do not eat chickens. She also rejects eating cow. Her fiance is a commercial fisherman, so they don’t mind eating dead fish and other dead animals. This was before Thanksgiving and she was speculating that her fiance would probably eat turkey at his parents’ house even though he doesn’t eat chicken. My theory is that they see their chickens the way other people see their cats and dogs.

    • Many people think that removing some animals from their diet but continue to eat others is a good compromise. I even know people who claim they are doing good for animals because they eat animals only on weekends and special occasions. My experience before I became a vegan was similar. I knew the plight of chickens and calves and stopped eating chicken and veal for two decades before I became a full vegetarian and then vegan. Now when I think about it, I wish I had known what I know now sooner.

  3. Sad but true. Farm animals, unfortunately, are at the bottom of the scale for concern. Cecil was strikingly beautiful, and Dr. Palmer’s behavior was despicable, which helped.

I wonder if the story of just one cow kicked and abused on a factory farm, forced onto a transport truck and bounced around through a long trip, and finally prodded and battered through the slaughter line to have her throat cut would finally get some sympathy. Too often they’re shown as part of the herd standing in the feed lot without the story of their fate.

But even though Cecil and Marius and Harambe got a lot of attention, has anything improved? People erupt in bursts of outrage, make a comment, and then move on. There is seldom sustained action, which is part of the problem.
